Down in the grasses.......
...at Marden meadows.
Rosie and i went for a trip into Kent today to see the Green-winged orchids of Marden meadows.
We had great fun navigating our way there, counting wisteria and Oast houses along the way.. sadly the green wings were only just coming into flower and there were nowhere near as many as I remember 3 years ago! However, while I was in the grass photographing a few of the orchids that were in flower I noticed loads of these Adder's tongue ferns.
The Adder's tongue fern Ophioglossum vulgatum is an unusual fern that grows in old grasslands. It usually appears between June and August (although these seem to be very early), spending the rest of the year below ground as a rhizome. It is considered a good indicator species of ancient meadows.
