Sugar sugar

What does a pastry with sugary bottom and black nonpareils sprinkled on it do on a side of a tree in a Finnish forest?

Well I did not notice it doing anything special.

How can camoulfaging as a pastry benefit a burl? That is the big question of course ;-)
