Traveller's Rest, Grasmere
Or to be precise, just north of Grasmere on the A591. This iconic Lakeland hostelry must have fed and watered scores of weary hikers, located as it is beneath a popular approach to Helvellyn and Fairfield to the east of the road, and Helm Crag and Far Easedale to the west. It dates from the 16th century and oozes charm. I love to imagine the coaches with their teams of horses which would have stopped here on their way to, or from, the big pass through the mountains at Dunmail Raise, a couple of miles to the north.
I often park my car in the lay-by near here, and today I was walking Helm Crag and returning via Far Easedale Gill.
