The Red Building
The morning consisted of visiting two small mosques and an even smaller Hindu temple, none of which took long. We then found a really interesting historic house. It was a Chinese shophouse and has been restored to how it would have been. So many of the old shophouses have been modernised using concrete additions and are now really ugly. The heritage group that did the restoration of the one we visited wanted to demonstrate to the owners of other shophouses that you can restore it using original materials and preserve the original features and still make it meet modern requirements. See here for more details and some pictures as my photos of it weren't very good. The man working there was full of great information and stories and really brought the place to life.
After a long lunch we did a bit of shopping. Another great meal in the evening. This is the Dutch-built Stadthuys, known locally as ‘the red building’.
