Unknown Scottish history- Indian Peter

While walking around Stirling University with a friend today we spotted these ducklings on Airthrey loch.

The conversation got around to unknown bits of Scottish history and the remarkable story of Indian Peter, the ten-year-old boy from Aberdeen kidnapped and sold into slavery in the 18th century to American planters.

He returned to Scotland some fifteen years later and wrote a book about it.

The original is now in the National Library of Scotland but several books have since been written about this remarkable man who became one of Edinburgh’s more colourful characters, known as Indian Peter, because he dressed as an Indian, opened a coffee house, and published the city’s first City Directory in 1773.
