Rosslynlee Hospital

Rosslynlee is one of several historic hospitals in the Lothians; while Mr Flum and B (alias MasterFlum) were doing technical stuff nearby I took a walk round the perimeter - Heras fencing permitting - through pleasant grounds.

The hospital opened in 1874 as the District Asylum for Midlothian and Peebles, built by William Lambie Moffatt. The original block was designed on an E‑plan of two storeys, two wings being added in 1898 by R. Rowand Anderson. In 1948 it became part of the Board of Management of the Royal Edinburgh Asylum and Associated Hospitals under the South Eastern Hospital Board, and renamed, (as were many County Asylums) as Rosslynlee Hospital. It closed in 2010.

The upper photo shows the original main entrance, according to the old maps; the lower photo shows the rear. The chapel, with arched windows occupied the first storey of the central block, which has an octagonal belltower with weather vane, just visible also in the upper photo.
