Field

The children at nursery are learning about summer's end just now and thinking about harvest and where our food comes from. They have been interested in making bread and wanted to find out more about how bread is made so I was trying to find some actual wheat to show them.

I left early so I could visit this field on the way to work but on closer inspection I have learned that it is actually barley. The best I could do was manage a few photos though as there was a good few feet between the gate and fence and the start of the crop and no stray seeds had rooted themselves nearer the road as I had hoped so I could pluck a few stalks for the children to see. I was dressed in my best as I was interviewing candidates today so didn't want to start climbing fences in broad daylight and was slightly anxious about being caught by an angry farmer.

When we lived on Finlaystone Estate we passed this field every morning on the way down to the main road at Langbank. Freya loved it and called it her velvet field because of the way the grasses looked when they blew in the wind, particularly in the height of summer when they were tall and green. It was nice to drive that road again and think about the happy times we had when we lived in such an amazing place.
