Common ramping-fumitory

Another day of report writing, with little time for photography. This is a slightly faffed about image of a specimen of common ramping-fumitory that Pete brought back from Kent. Fumitories are very attractive, but can be quite tricky to identify, requiring close examination under a hand lens or microscope. This species is characteristic of freely-draining acidic soils in southern and western Britain and along the east coast of northern England and Scotland, but is very rare in eastern England so not one that I regularly come across.
