The stone gardener
Every morning since I've been here this woman has been collecting larger stones and rocks from a small patch of shoreline and throwing them in the sea. Each and every time, these past ten days (and more), she searches and finds four or five rocks that are then hurled into the Mediterranean.
I've no idea what she is up to, but she is purposeful and she is intent and she is utterly engaged. A stone gardener. Mindfully creating her own wee zen garden by the sea. A fine purpose then, an engagement with her landscape. I am already anticipating seeing her tomorrow, this fussy negotiation between the shoreline and the incoming tide. The simple application of labour: throwing rocks at the sea. Why not?
