Water Tower, Shooters Hill, London

Shooters Hill is the highest point of South London; its counterpart in North London is Hampstead Heath.  The road is part of what used to be known as Watling Street, the Roman road from Dover to London.

The name "Shooters Hill", first recorded in 1226, derives from its remote location and the consequent risk of being attacked there by footpads or highwaymen.  Dick Turpin is said to pave plied his trade there.

The tower, a prominent landmark visible for many miles around, was built in 1910.
