Way Out East Café

We visited Takamatsu purely to take the ferry to Naoshima. We were rewarded with views over the bay from a spectacular 24th storey rooftop viewing gallery, a 2 Km covered shopping arcade (the longest in Japan allegedly) and a wonderful coffee shop. Our genial bespectacled host was cheerfully roasting his next batch of beans in a tidy, compact, gas fired roaster, whilst drip filtering his next customers special blend coffees. In a corner of the café was a coffee plant in a pot with a fair old display of beans and looking unbelievably as healthy as any Botanical Garden specimen I have seen. Elsewhere in the café, were toys and games and adverts for films about coffee. I could not help but think of another café I know, slightly further to the west, where good coffee is served amidst books and games with encouragements to attend interesting cinema.
