A beakful of crab
Went to Southend, Snells Beach, just aft 1000 this morning, about four hours after high tide. Almost as soon as I got there, I saw the first Tuturiwhatu (New Zealand Dotterel) searching for food amongst the sea weed in the shallows. Initially, I saw just the one. Although convinced that I was seeing it having caught something have some difficulty in getting it down. One photo (rather blurred) seems to show a crab.
As I moved a little further out onto the mudflats, I saw two more Tuturiwhatu. Mostly running about, and looking more busy than successful, there was the occasional successful stab. This one is about to swallow its meal of crab.
