Osprey

At Dryden Lake. The osprey or fish eagle was another one of the 3 raptors that were brought back from the brink of extinction in the 70's and 80's . The others were the bald eagle, which was down to one nesting pair in NY by the 70's ,and the peregrine falcon. The peregrine  was essentially extinct in the eastern US and numbers even in the west were low by the 70's . All of these raptors were affected by DDT. Cornell started the peregrine restoration project which was so successful that many cities (including Binghamton which has a pair that nests on the Securities Mutual building) now have them nesting on buildings. The restoration of these 3 birds was only successful because of banning DDT.
There are quite a few osprey nests on the road just outside of Montezuma refuge. (They like the power line towers)
