Ivy

The thing is that insects can't distinguish between weeds and natives.

This is a Meadow Argus guzzling very happily on ivy flowers - I suspect that's because they are the only flowers around at the moment.  And there were dozens of butterflies.  A wonderful sight.

So, here's the dilemma.  Do we eradicate the ivy and let the flutteries starve?  Or do we preserve a patch of ivy so that all are happy except the died-in-the-wool environmentalists.  It's not even that we can plant stuff that will keep the butterflies fed at this time of year.  Because there isn't anything.  We are between seasons; summer (hopefully) has had it, but the rains haven't started.  It's going to be a good 4-6 weeks before we get flowers again.
