By Himself

By Himself

I have never warmed to Barbara Hepworth's work before but seeing it bathed in sunlight in situ in the beautiful garden of the house where she lived and worked brought it to life and changed my opinion.
We also visited the newly reopened Tate St Ives and although the new extension is not yet open, I was deeply impressed by the architecture (see extra) and the display and interpretation of the collection. There was also an exhibit of ceramics inspired by Bearnard Leach whose work I was influenced by when I was throwing pots  back in the 1970's. When the main collection of the St Ives Group is back in the Tate it will be marvelous.
We also went to the Penlee Gallery in Penzance yesterday, which has an important collection of the Newlyn Group, and the Exchange gallery with an excellent show of recent contemporary work by Joy Gregory.
St Ives is beautiful in the sunshine but very busy and perishingly cold in the north wind - too cold for sketching outdoors!
