Local history

Walking past this memorial on my way to the bank I remembered the strange tale of why this coffin is placed in this particular way. The strange tomb was erected by John London (1783 - 1843) in memory of his parents, William and Agnes. Legend says that property inherited by William would only be retained if he remained 'above ground' so this was the son's way of ensuring this. Others, perhaps not as charitable, said that pair thought that they were above all the others in the churchyard and wanted an elevated position.
