Man of stone

The two founders of the Republic were honoured in their lifetimes by having statues erected in the city's main square. Alfredo's statue was of gilded bronze and it gleamed in the evening sun. Guido had to be persuaded to accept a simple statue of granite. Within a few years, Alfredo's statue had been melted down. But after more than a century, Guido's statue still stands, proud and alone.
