Cómpeta
frequently referred to as the pearl of the Axarquía, is situated 638 meters above sea level at the foot of La Maroma, the highest peak of the Sierra Tejeda at 2065 m.
Cómpeta has a population of 3700 residents called competeños spread over the southern slopes of the Sierra de Almijara.
From Roman origins, its name is derived from the Latin Compita-Orum, which means "crossing of roads" and it was a place where the Romans held their feasts and offerings.
Competa is a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets that date back to Moorish times. The charming flower bedecked streets of the old town lead to the Plaza Almijara which is dominated by the magnificent sixteenth century Mudejar.
MOH and I discovered Competa 6 years ago and have visited many times.
It is my most special place on the planet.
Backblipped 16.8.12 - 19.8.12 - hope you enjoy my taste of Andalucia
