Change
I like change. It stimulates. In a business context, it creates opportunity.
Change doesn't always mean progress, of course. A vital distinction, as this little island is learning.
The National is a newcomer to the Scottish media scene in the last 3 years. I don't agree with everything in it, but it's a newspaper. That's the point. It does three important (in my view) things.
First, it offers a pro independence line (not uncritically) to offset slightly the rest of the media in Scotland - 100% under London's thumb.
Second, it offers change and progress.
Third, it gives space to journalists who - because of age, sex, colour or opinions - will never get a sniff of an opportunity elsewhere.
I buy The National 3 times a week on average.
Bella Caledonia is one of the icons of the new media, published online for many years now. A thorn in the flesh of the traditional media.
It has started a collaboration with The National to publish a weekend magazine, just as many newspapers do.
Change for sure. Progress? Time will tell.
