Samphire Hoe

89 acres of new land built using the spoil from the Channel Tunnel. It sits below the chalk cliffs between Dover and Folkestone and is accessed through a single-track tunnel which slopes down from the A20 to the car park. A lovely café, plenty of seats and bracing walks along the sea wall - that's to the left here. The wide expanse of concrete is to protect the land from the sea; when the waves crash over they swill away down to the wall which has scuppers to allow the water to drain. On rough days the waves crash over to the lifebelts. The name comes from the edible plant which grows on the cliffs and is mentioned by the Bard in King Lear - these are Shakespeare Cliffs so it's entirely appropriate.
