Where the Ythan meets the ocean
Today we visited the Ythan Estuary, where it meets the ocean. It is designated as an Special Protection Area under European Birds directive, and is known for populations of wading birds, Eiders and Terns, as well as seals, both harbour (common) and grey.
The blip shows the sand dunes and, in the fore ground, a colony of seals basking on the sea shore. The eider ducks are on the water.
The Eider ducks are the largest duck in the northern hemisphere. The males have beautiful black and white plumage. It is the soft down of the female though, that is famous for use in quilts.
These ducks are widespread in the north and west of Scotland, but the Ythan is famed as a hotspot. There is no harvesting of eider down these days.
"Cover your eyes" is the title of a lovely song by Karin Polwart, which includes the line, "where the Ythan meets the ocean"
