Why...?

Do they put labels on Papayas saying 'ripe and ready to eat' and 'ripened on the (Brazilian) tree' when the fact is the thing is rock hard and won't be ready for at least a week (provided it is helped along a bit by indoor heating and being left in a sunny spot)?  Just wondering... :-)
Still, I love them so I bought it, and will take my chances that it ripens.  It will soon be able to truthfully declare that it has been sun-ripened on a (tropical north German) balcony!  :-)
