Tirkkonen Building

Shot this photo of Tirkkonen Building on my way to the art class. The building was built in 1901 by Maria Tirkkonen and her son Nikolai Tirkkonen. The house is one of the prettiest in Tampere! The drawings were drafted by famous Finnish architects Lars Sonck and Birger Federley in 1899. That very year, Sonck gave up his offices in Tampere, leaving Federley to supervise the completion of the construction. The bottom part of the façade was made from Ylöjärvi granite and the roof was made of tin painted red.

J. Tirkkonen fabric, yarn and fashion store operated in Tirkkonen Building. The J. Tirkkonen traders was founded by Maria and Juhana Tirkkonen in 1869, their son Nikolai Tirkkonen was born in 1875. (Juhana Tirkkonen died in 1892.)

Upon completion, the Tirkkonen store was considered one of the finest buildings in Finland and the store itself prospered. In 1903, for instance, they began publishing a mail order fashion journal,  the Lamson pipemail system was added to the store in 1906 and in 1910 Nikolai bought the first van in Tampere to run deliveries with. Telling of their success was the fact that the fabric store was considered one of the leading stores in the whole of Finland and they even donated the fountain on the side of Näsikallio in 1913, created by Emil Wikström.
