Las Terrazas
A beautiful place high in the mountains. We saw our first hummingbirds here, they are so attractive. The hills were originally deforested terraced and planted with coffee plants and later abandoned. The government realised that too much of the forest was being destroyed and in 1968 persuaded the local farmers to replant the area. It was a very large job but they were rewarded with a permanent home in the apartment blocks that were built along with a hotel to encourage visitors and income into the region. The hotel can be seen behind the colourful apartments. Today only people born in or married to a resident of the area are allowed to live there. The extras are of a view from an abandoned coffee plantation and the community building. We had lunch in the old plantation owners house which is now a restaurant.
