Pennine Crossing

Just after I joined the M74 at Abington I kept seeing these signs: IS YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER? Ha ha! It’s the 22nd of March! Don’t they know it’s Spring already? Oh, right, they must mean NEXT Winter! Except that by the time I joined the A66 at Penrith, the day had already lost any Spring there might once have been in its step, and as the road climbed up to the actual Pennine summit, driving became a nightmare of sleet, snow and surface water. This road warrior lark, blimey, sometimes you just wish you’d taken the train.
