Drilled face on a spruce

I usually carry my camera with me everywhere I go, but today I left it home when I went for a walk with Sami in Linnakallio area - weather was very grey and wet. Saw this interesting looking and freshly eaten tree, so now I have to settle for a mobile camera photo only. I wonder what creature is behind this work of art? A woodpecker?  Do they drill trees this low?
