MonoMonday - Community
This evening I attended the monthly meeting of a Calligraphy community, held at the Hawthorn Uniting Church, a local community centre. The president gave a presentation on Paschal Candles which she paints each year for her local church.
The Paschal candle is a long white candle (or yellow beeswax in this case) and is always marked with a cross, the year and the Greek letters alpha and Omega signifying that God is the beginning and the end. The flame symbolises Christ's illumination.
A new Paschal candle is blessed and lit every year at Easter, and is used throughout the Paschal season which is during Easter and then throughout the year on special occasions, such as baptisms and funerals.
The photo shows the remains of some of her candles
