Pohutukawa tree
This is an iconic NZ scene - pohutukawa tree leaning out lazily over the water. These trees are plentiful up on the peninsula; in early summer/ Christmas they are covered in red bottle brush type flowers giving it the name New Zealand Christmas tree. They thrive at the coast with branches dipping down into the water providing shady places for picnics and snoozes and keeping cars cool.
