St Peters
Blippers block is a problem when the weather is as dismal as it has been of late. Today was simply dull, drizzly, windy and chilly. We did go to the AGM of the Twinning committee and enjoyed a nice lunch of cawl followed by apple crumble and custard. With the trip to our twin town of Loctudy in Brittany taking place over Easter this was our last fundraiser so a good turn out was essential. I am pleased to say that happened and we are looking forward to our trip.
Chris was driving home and I was trying to think of a good topic to Blip about when St Peters appeared through the bushes. This is our local parish church and is a listed building with an interesting history. Built in 1910 for the princely sum of£6300 it is listed as a fine example of late gothic style with a fine tower. Unfortunately the church was never completed but even so it is the largest church in the north of the county. Originally conceived to provide a place of worship for the many hundreds of cross Atlantic passengers that were expected to sail from Fishguard Harbour ,on Cunard Line ships ,the building stopped when that trade moved to Liverpool. Despite the Great Western Railway serving Fishguard Harbour and our lovely Fishguard Bay Hotel being developed close to the terminals ,the building of the breakwaters caused the harbour to silt up and large vessels such as the Mauritania could no longer dock . With the loss of this trade the money for the church dried up with the one end being simply bricked up and the west isle was never built.
Recently a leak in the roof and other serious maintenance issues have been identified and the church has been closed. Such a large building will require substantial funds to repair and ,as ever, the listed status will make that bill even larger.
