West Norwood blips

Sails

Difficult to choose a blip today because none of my photos were very good! I’ve gone for the scale model of the Avondster, a 17th Century ship, that’s in the Marine Archaeology Museum. The original ship sank in Galle Harbour in 1659 and the wreck was excavated in the 1990s. The 2004 tsunami resulted in many of the items retrieved from the ship being lost again. What wasn’t lost is on display in the museum.

The tall, thick walls of the Fort largely protected that area from the tsunami whereas the town outside the walls was badly damaged. I walked around the bits of the Fort walls that I didn’t get to yesterday. There are large gaps in the walls where cannons once stood. Today you find young, smooching Sri Lankan couples there instead of cannons! About 5pm it poured with rain. Although the rain didn’t last long, the cloud was still too thick for a sunset.
