Garden Suburb

Westerton, Bearsden where cherry blosssom proliferates, is on the boundary of northwest Glasgow. It was a small model housing development, the first of its kind in Scotland. Its completion was interrupted by World War 1. The aim was to create a cooperatively-owned housing community for working class families at affordable prices. Only 81 of the original target of 120 houses were constructed. However, there was further development in 1935 and 1948. The tenants' company was disbanded in the mid-1980s and properties were sold to sitting tenants. However the houses are listed and there's still  a strong sense of community. The cluster of people around the crossing point are waiting for the children to descend down the path from Westerton Primary School on the hill to continue their homeward journey.
