Scotsman Steps

I decided yesterday that I would expand my project of shots of Edinburgh by night (actually by dusk) to include some of the closes and wynds (alleys to the English ear). There are real difficulties in doing this photographically as the contrast in exposure between the darkened alleyway and the patch of sky at the end of the close is just so enormous.. In the end I have chosen an image where there is no actual sky but only reflected daylight. It is of the Scotsman Steps these were part of an exhibition in 2010 by artist and musician Matthew Creed. The steps have been resurfaced with  marbles from all around the globe which gives and glorious colourful floor to these ancient steps. Balancing there light and sorting out the angles of a superwide shot proved a challenge in post-production but I quite like the understated image that emerged

When I first posted this blip I forgot to give the answer to yesterday's mystery object. It was as most people guessed a jubilee clip or worm wheel hosepipe clip. I wondered where the name came from and checked Wikipedia. Evidently they were first invented by Commander Lumley Robinson of the British Royal Navy who chose the patented and registered trade name of 'Jubilee'
