Stonehenge, USA

It's day four of our mini-road trip and on a lark, we decided to catch a quick flight to the UK and visit Stonehenge, a site we've both longed to see for quite some time.

OK - - we didn't do that, but we did the next best thing, and stopped at a Stonehenge replica, right here in Goldendale, WA. Goldendale is also home to the Maryhill Museum of Art. This museum was originally the private residence of Pacific Northwest entrepreneur, Sam Hill, who was the driving force behind so many projects in WA such as the Peace Arch monument in Blaine, the Columbia River Highway, and the Stonehenge monument you see pictured here.

Sam Hill built Stonehenge USA as a memorial to the fallen soldiers from Klickitat County, WA during WWI. In Hill's time, it was believed that the original Stonehenge was built by ancient Druids and used for ceremonies involving human sacrifice. Hill intended his Stonehenge replica to convey the idea that modern warfare is but another form of human sacrifice.
