I wonder what was in this?

Saw something glistening in the grass down by Ullswater a week ago and picked up a glass bottle stopper in pristine condition. The storms of a couple of weeks ago must've uncovered it.  It carries the initial 'M' and Patent Number 2482.  According to the British Records Office, Patent 2482 was granted in 1843.
