Always a Bridesmaid...

The pool party/Corn Hole Tournament yesterday went on into the night...especially the Corn Hole part. I must explain that this is a game, hailing from the Midwest , which requires a slanted board with a hole in it and a number of sandbags. Participants stand a carefully measured number of feet away and try to toss the sandbag through the hole. Other rules apply, but the enthusiasm of the group of 40-something guys, a few gals, and a bunch of kids kept me fascinated for quite awhile without any understanding of the rules.

An 8 or 9 year old boy with an iPad with the latest score on it ran around waving it like a movie director.

OilMan, paired with a 10 year old girl in a bikini made it to the next-to-last round.

The director of The Simpsons mixed it up with #1 son and granddaughter #2. They were the ultimate winners of the whole thing, but it took about 7 hours!

There was much stopping to remeasure the distance from the hole, redraw the brackets, decide whose turn it was and open beers.

Eventually darkness fell amid more fiddling--this time with the klieg lights brought out out to light the boards.

When I got tired of watching the game I enjoyed the similarity of the party to a 7th grade dance. The women all gathered together next to the pool to keep an eye on their kids. The men all gathered around the beer (under a specially erected canopy) keeping an eye on the competition. Not much interaction between the two groups except for the kids who seemed as comfortable in the CornHole game as they were in the pool.

The only thing that might have gotten an adult into the pool would have been a child going under for the second or third time.

When OilMan got eliminated, we gave up and went to bed, but the Corn Hole madness continued on.

This morning a somewhat bleary trip to the Encino (home to lots of actors, directors, editors, etc.) supermarket yielded this picture of a little old lady, fresh from church, shopping for Sunday lunch. I missed the shot of a little old man and lady crossing the street hand in hand, wearing a pink shirt and suit to match her pink hair. Only in L.A.
