sunshine on a cloudy day

The marine layer is twice as heavy today as it was yesterday. We even had to wear our rain jackets to ward off the moisture on our morning walk. By the afternoon the fog had burned off some, but still poor visibility over the ocean, so we skipped the beach and took a walk along the road. There are many lovely homes and gardens here!
I have no idea what this colorful bloom is, but it starts out as a conical bud about the size of my fist, covered with white featherlike things. Then it opens into a big white puff ball, and then the featherlike things twist around to show the red underpart.
Amazing design!
