The Residency, Lucknow
The Residency was a British complex of, now ruined, ornate brick large houses, a church, and store rooms which became the focus of The Siege of Lucknow which lasted 4 months in 1857. There was an uprising of Indian men against the British..Lots of reasons but one was the introduction of the Enfield rifle which were said to be greased with beef or pork fat which could not be tolerated by Hindu and Muslim soldiers. I remember some of this from A level history, never thought I'd come here!
The place is full of atmosphere. The ruined church yard has many gravestones to mark the deaths of the British soldiers and in some cases wives and children who died during the siege.
A morning visit here and to other beautiful and important buildings, Bada and Chota Imambada. Lucknow is probably the cleanest and most beautiful Indian city we have visited in our three holidays in this amazing country.
A free afternoon and evening before we set off to our final stopping place... Varanasi!
