See you later Alligator

Yes I am back after 24 hours without wifi and writing this a day late. The breakdown was caused by stormy weather.

Anyway back to yesterday...We didn't see any alligators or many birds on the river Chambai so were taken to the Chambai Gharial Sanctuary. This project was set up by the Indian Government in 1979 to protect the critically endangered gharial ( they are small alligators) population. Survival rate of the young in the river is 2% and from the sanctuary it is 85%.

Some of the eggs are taken from the river side each laying period, incubated and hatched. The babies are the reared in open tanks, fed live fish daily and moved up into bigger tanks as they get bigger. When they are about 3 years old they are returned to the river.

My blip shows some of the yearling alligators...The smallest we saw.
