Mildred

At this time of year it's a bit perilous walking down a garden path.  You are likely to face plant an orb web at any moment.

Luckily this massive web wasn't across the path, it's between my letter box and a tree a metre or so away. 

During the day the web remains, but Mildred sleeps in a convenient spot.  Come the darkness she emerges and positions herself in the centre of the web.

You can try this for yourself - if you were to come across such a web, just hold your hand in front of it - slowly move your hand towards the web, and magically the web will move forward towards you.

Incredibly spooky.  It's said the web is charged to move towards prey.

Like I said - spooky.
