Culture

We aren't really used to having our Saturdays off yet... it's not something we have got the hang of! Thankfully we are finding plenty to keep us busy. We live in travelling distance from Hull, the 2017 city of culture and there's loads (soooo much) happening as part of that. Today there was a workshop celebrating Ghanaian culture, in honour of their 60th anniversary of their independence. She had a brilliant time learning about the country. She loved the maps and impressed the guy talking to us that she knew where Africa was and then found the Ghanaian flag on the list. We learnt about and did some adinkra printing. She chose her symbols very carefully for their meaning and picked love, Gods presence and liberty. We did a page of printing for her to keep and then printed her chosen ones onto fabric as part of a large artwork that will be presented to Ferens art gallery. We got to see an amazing display of adowa dancing, complete with the full ceremony of "king and queen", and procession etc. She had a great time learning some African drumming. I'd expected us to be there a half hour perhaps but we were over two hours and the wonderful people hosting were encouraging us to stay longer!

We had some jobs to do in the city, including trying to find her some new dance leggings. We visited Every.Single. Possible shop. Not one pair fitted her. Until tk maxx. Where I picked up three identical brand, style and size trousers, just different pattern. Two of them were massive. One of them was several inches narrower than the others though and fit! And the detailing perfectly matches her maroon dance class tshirt. Win! Whilst we were in town I took her to see the Blade installation. I'd tried to explain it to her but she hadn't got her head round it- she was amazed when she saw it!
