Taranaki ( English = Mt Egmont)
Maori legend has it that Taranaki used to live in the middle of the North Island with 3 other volcanos. Taranaki fell in love with a beautiful smaller mountain that was 'taken' by Tongariro and a mighty battle ensued. By day break Tongariro had won and Taranaki was banished out to the west coast, leaving a huge gauge on the landscape which eventually became the mighty Wanganui river.

Taranaki is one the finest examples of andesiticstrato volcano. It last erupted in 1770 but is not considered dormant at all - just resting!
