Sunlight on water

After complaining about the scarcity of sunlight yesterday, someone must have been listening as there was lots of it today – in Keswick there was anyway.

Lots of words and lots of sunlight
 
We both went to a talk – Keswick and the Pencil, which was all about the history of pencil manufacturing in the town. It was fascinating – the guy certainly knew his stuff and made it really interesting. (Our girls will laugh when we tell them about this as there is a family legend around the idea that they have of being taken round the Pencil Museum when they were young whenever it rained and they found it really boring. I am certain we only went once and they were interested, but you know how these family stories just grow!)
 
Gordon stayed on for a talk about the State Management of Pubs in Carlisle. He was interested as he remembered it – it didn’t stop until 1974.
 
I opted out of this one and went for a walk by the Lake. How wonderful to wander in the sunshine with so few people about. Not often one can say this in Keswick!
 
Then we both went to a talk on the History of Penrith. This was given by an archetypal professor (he signed books with a fountain pen and used blotting paper . . . ‘blotting paper’ the people around gasped!). But he was brilliant. It is inspirational to be in the company of someone who knows so much and whose enthusiasm carries an audience with it.
