Lovers of solitude and moorland need look no further than this criss-cross of a little-visited fell at the head of Littondale...

So, us lovers of solitude set off this afternoon on this walk. Starting at Halton Gill up over the fell and then back down to Yockenthwaite along the Wharfe following the Dales Way to Beckermonds. So far so good. Then we ascended south across rough grass and "potentially heavy ground" - er, yes, after the wettest summer in 100 years, the going was very heavy, I got a boot full of bog water and it was at this point we discovered I had left the emergency chocolate supplies at home!!! So onward to the top into the teeth of a howling wind. But even running on empty and knackered, we felt it had all been worth it when we saw this view up the valley to remote Cosh. The sun fell in swaithes across the valley and lit up Cosh Beck, a silver ribbon of water. That's Inglebrough in the cloud behind. We took photos and then were blown down the hill back to Halton Gill. A pretty little hamlet, recently used in the filming of Susan Hill's ghost story - The Woman in Black.
