SHROVE TUESDAY / PANCAKE DAY
Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. In addition, pancakes, in Christianity, symbolise four pillars of the Christian faith — eggs for creation, flour as the mainstay of the human diet, salt for wholesomeness and milk for purity.".
So I made pancakes for my breakfast today. Not with flour though - too many syns. I used porridge oats, eggs and yogurt. Served them with extra yogurt and some ( defrosted ) frozen sweet black cherries. The mixture was enough for another another batch which I had later in the day sprinkled with sweetener and lemon juice and served with chopped banana. Obviously not as nice as traditional pancakes ( which I would have had with golden syrup or maple syrup ) but not bad.
I had a lazy morning. Then this afternoon I popped down to The Metrocentre. Bought a "New Home " card for Becky and Mike - and posted it. I have received constant up dates all day via Whatsap from Becky about the house move. And she phoned around 9pm and we talked for an hour. Apart from the degus being frightened of all the upheaval everything went very smoothly and they got into their new home at 2.30pm. They went to the pub this evening for a meal and to watch the match on TV. The pub was full of Brighton fans. Newcastle United were playing at Brighton this evening so I guess Becky and Mike had to keep a low profile as Newcastle supporters. There was a pub quiz on too. Becky and Mike took part --- and they won. Their prize was some bottles of craft beer and £7. " The regulars " were not best pleased that a couple of strangers breezed off with first prize.
I listened to the match on the radio. Brighton scored first - a penalty. However Newcastle fought back and won the match ( by the skin of their teeth ) 2 - 1. They are top of the table again. Its nip and tuck with Brighton who are now back to second.
