Marina mayhem

Earlier this month I reported that the proposed Fishguard Marina had received planning consent to begin the first stage development of the scheme. This was estimated to cost £40m.
The Marina has been on the horizon for a long time following a Welsh Government report championing a chain of Marinas around the Welsh coast. The Anglesea Boat Company proposed a simple marina and was promised a significant sum in Objective One European Funding. Unfortunately this scheme was sunk  ,and you really can not make this one up by the Lord Marcher of ???? a title he had purchased at auction, claiming that he owned the foreshore and not the Crown. This outrageous attempt at extortion ended up in the courts and the delay meant that the Objective One funding was lost. The boat Company then went into business with Conygar Investment Company and a significantly larger scheme including 250 flats was proposed. The latest version of that plan was given the go ahead by PCC and we thought that the Marina was going to happen at last.
Today the Conygar Investment Company sold most of its portfolio for £128m and now we have no idea what this means for the Marina development. The history of large investment plans in North Pembs would lead one to the conclusion that the chances of the Marina being built have just been sunk and even the most optimistic amount us would have to agree this look like yet another lost opportunity.
Without some investments which could support our failing economy the young people from our communities will continue to leave to find work down the M4 leaving an ageing population and second homes.
