The Cooperage
My memory of The Cooperage is that of a great pub in the early 1980's with fantastic music on the jukebox. I also remember the floors being very uneven.
It appears that it was built in the 15th century. The ground floor ceiling timbers are reported to have come from a Dutch Ship that was sunk in Tyne. For a long time it was lived in by various merchant families and in the 1850's it became a grocery store.
In the late 1870's John Arthur Cooper bought the property and this is how it got its name. The family business was run from there for almost one hundred years.
Eventually, in 1974 The Cooperage became a pub. Sadly, it closed in 2009 as it needed extra soundproofing and it was going to be too expensive.
I'm not sure if it is used at all now. Certainly, when we passed yesterday it wasn't open. It would be good to think that one day it will reopen its doors.
