F is For Fig
I've just spent a couple of hours wandering around Callan Park.
The Callan Park Hospital for the Insane (1878 – 1914) was an insane asylum located in the grounds of Callan Park on the shores of Sydney Harbour in Lilyfield.
The vast grounds and the stone buildings at the edge of the harbour are very beautiful, though of course, the poor patients would have no doubt been oblivious to its beauty.
It's not hard to imagine the privations they would have endured, or the cruel treatments that would have been meted out behind those stone walls.
I have included an extra of one of the buildings, which is currently being used by Sydney College of the Arts, but there are plans to merge this with the Uni of NSW in the near future.
This is very controversial, and there are ongoing demonstrations.
It's hard to see that the state government isn't itching to sell what is now a huge area of prime inner city real estate.
They are yet to announce their intentions.
Mmm.. I think I've gone a bit off track.
The blip photo is of one of the many Moreton Bay figs in the grounds
