Porthole

This is a porthole type of window on the door of a lift. The picture is taken from inside the steel-walled cabin. The two bright dots are reflections of the lights on the ceiling.

I pass this lift almost daily at work, but only today did I notice how interesting the round thing looks.

A funny thing happened to me when I was taking this picture.

I took a few shots of the round window from the outside. Then I walked in and saw that the lighting inside the empty lift looked even more interesting. When I had the picture that I wanted and was ready to leave, I found that I couldn't get out of the lift! The doors just wouldn't slide open!

I pressed the number buttons, rode between the floors a couple of times, even waved my hands in front of the doors, but to no effect. Could it be that the flash of my camera had somehow caused the door mechanism to tilt? Nah, impossible...

Just as I was reluctantly contemplating on making an embarrassing phone call to my co-workers, the unexpected happened. The lift door was pulled open by a relaxed young man who stepped in and hit a button. Seeing my dumbfounded expression, he asked: "Which floor do you want?"

This goes to show how easily we men forget ourselves when seeing round shapes of interest.
