A Crying Shame
The building top and bottom right is the Church of the Ascension. A listed building, it has recently benefitted from a £250,000 scheme of refurbishment. The redevelopment of Lower Broughton has been carefully planned to provide this remnant of Salford's past with a fitting setting.
Then almost two weeks ago it suffered an arson attack and a huge fire. It is still a crime scene. No one has been able to go inside, the whole structure is unsafe. It was reported in the Evening News that a young man had been arrested. To set fire to a much loved building like this because - allegedly - he "just wanted to get nicked" is incomprehensible,
The other structure is all that remains of the listed Springfield and Overbridge Mill, which was devastated by fire a few years ago.
Blips of dereliction are sometimes picturesque. Not these I am afraid.
