a parklet...

...hogging several roadside parking spaces but oh how gorgeous this is and thankfully now blossoming around Perth.

Parklets first 'popped up' in San Francisco in 2010 offering a place to rest, stop and observe the goings on...people watching paradise...with some pretty plantings and funky furniture (extra).

This pair are in Vic Park and not surprisingly very cool as is the whole street (though it's actually a Highway! and surely the thinnest in the world at this point)  which hums with street art, cafes and fab food (today we had Peking duck every which way.)

Some years ago I wrote an article for a magazine about 'PARKing Day' an annual, worldwide event where artists and designers transform a metered parking spot into a 'pop up' park for a day.
It looks like 'parklets' have taken that to the next level.
